Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certification: What is it?

GOTS certification: what is it?

The Clothing in our Baby collection, manufactured by Filobio, is made from high-quality fabrics.  The Filobio quality goes beyond design and aesthetics. Throughout the production process, safe and allergen-free products are used to protect babies’ skin.

It’s important that the production of our children’s clothing line respects nature’s balance; we think that each choice we make can contribute to a cleaner and healthier world for our little ones!

That’s why we’d like you to know about the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certification.

GOTS is an International certification. GOTS guarantees consumers that organic textile products are made from natural fiber harvest through each stage of manufacture and to the labelling of the finished product.

The Global Organic Textile Standard, created in response to increasing organic textile production and high demand for industry production and distribution standards, has gained strong international recognition. Thanks to this recognition, organic textile producers now have a recognized certification based on shared principles and on evaluative criteria.

All elements of production are involved, from the cultivation of raw materials to the different processing and handling stages, through to the finished product.

The GOTS certification criteria were developed by integrated work groups with the collaboration of different social partners including textile manufacturer representatives who themselves apply the criteria.

This element is extremely important, allowing the development of control and verification policies which, while rigorously attentive to the multiple social and environmental ethical aspects, are also practical, concrete and simple for companies to put into place.

The following are monitored:

  • Cultivation and harvest of raw materials
  • Cleaning
  • Spinning
  • Weaving
  • Dying and color fixing
  • Sewing and packaging
  • All ancillary and auxiliary processes necessary for production of the completed product.

The GOTS brand analysis all major aspects:

The health of the consumer, the end user:

  • Absence of harmful chemical substances such as harmful dyes, formaldehyde, heavy metals and other skin-irritating substances (protecting immediate health)
  • Absence of pesticide environmental emissions during the production process (protecting long-term health)

Protection of worker in the supply chain:

  • Guaranteeing respect for human and worker rights
  • The right to a fair salary
  • Verifying the health, safety, security and dignity of the work environment
  • Verifying the absence of child labor

Environmental protection:

  • Guaranteeing protection and preservation of soil, of ecosystems and of water systems, inhibiting the use of chemical products – fertilizers and pesticides – which contaminate groundwater and weaken and sterilize crop soil, destroying the greater ecosystem even as they create farmers’ dependency upon mega pharmaceutical companies which produce agricultural chemicals.
  • Further, the assessments required for GOTS certification also encompass the quality standard of certified products; certified textiles are regularly sampled and subjected to physical and chemical assessments, to determine their suitability and performance quality.

The following are tested:

  • Shrink resistance after washing
  • Color fade resistance with sun exposure
  • Durability and resistance to the friction of repeated washings
  • Resistance to normal use – saliva, perspiration, wear and tear.

Inspections not only verify that the production processes adhere to imposed parameters, but also sample products at various production stages.
These samples are tested at independent laboratories in order to have a proven verification of the absence of harmful substances and of the product’s quality and strength.
The certification process, carried out through sample testing, guarantees truth and transparency. The process also applies to all accessories included with the textile product: closures, fastenings, buttons, appliqués are also sampled and analyzed to guarantee their safety and their production’s low environmental impact.
